About Operation Respect CT

Operation Respect CT, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization, was founded in 2001 to educate, train, and assist schools and community-based youth service organizations in creating safe and respectful environments for youth and the adults who work with them. Founding partners are the Connecticut State Department of Education, The Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, and People’s Bank. Our goal is to build healthy relationships and reduce youth violence. A number of initiatives with related audiences are offered by Operation Respect CT.

The “Don’t’ Laugh at Me(DLAM) program, targeted primarily at elementary and middle school levels, is a project conceived of and produced by Peter Yarrow Productions and Educators for Social Responsibility. Music, video, and well-tested curricula are combined with a professional development component to help students, and the adults who impact their lives, to create “climates of respect” by working together to recognize intolerance, increase respect, and enhance sensitivity to students’ emotional needs. The introductory session for “Don’t’ Laugh at Me” consists of a 2-day initial workshop which is free of charge -- thanks to our founding partners. “Teams” of educators, administrators and other school staff such as bus drivers, cafeteria workers and coaches are invited to select and attend a 2-day workshop together.

The introductory session for “Respect Me! (RM) is a free 1-day program that has identical goals but is aimed at the middle and high school levels and, importantly, requires that faculty/staff and students participate together. Both initiatives are held several times a year in a central location so schools from around the state can participate. CEUs are awarded for these sessions.

The location for all DLAM sessions will be in Farmington High School/the Farmington Public Library. RM sessions are held at the Connecticut Association of Schools, 30 Realty Drive, Cheshire, CT 06410. The directions and registration form are posted on the Professional Development section of our web site.
