A Story in Fairfield

The following letter was sent by a parent from Mill Hill School in Fairfeild, CT after “Don’t Laugh at Me” assemblies were given to all of the elementary school aged students in September 2003.

Dear PTA Board,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for sponsoring the assembly last week. It was an invaluable support to my role at Mill Hill and to the district's zero tolerance policy. I wanted to share with you something that happened as a direct result of the assembly that shows how important and how effective these teachings are to our children. A mother had contacted me prior to the assembly regarding her son getting teased on the bus. While she wanted to make me aware of the situation, her goal was to have her son deal directly with the student that was being mean to him, using his own words. Her son was reluctant to do this until after the assembly. He told his mother about what he had learned that morning and said that he now knew what he had to do. The parents of the two students worked together and arranged a meeting between the two boys. The student being teased then told the student to stop and how he felt about what had happened. We couldn't ask for a better outcome than that! If we reach only one student each time then our efforts are worth it, and I'm sure we reached more than one. And if these two boys share their experience, then the lesson is taught to others. So if you have ever wondered, as I have at times, if we are making a difference, we are! Thank you again.
